WFCS STUDENTS GIVING BACK

In the WFCS Community, we treasure each student and find ways to serve each other as the need arises.  We work together through involvement with local missions and teach respect for the environment through outdoor educational experiences.  We teach a Christian worldview and participate in cross-cultural service projects.  Listed below are some of the recent projects students have participated in:

2nd Graders Collect School Supplies Collected for Third World Country Students

West Fallowfield’s Second Grade recently assembled 20 school kits as part of their class theme  of "Sharing God's Love with Others".  In response to the theme,  the class organized a mission project of collecting supplies to make school kits for needy children.  When the parents and children did their Back-to-School shopping, the students bought a few extra school supplies to share.  The kits included four notebooks, four pencils, one ruler, one large eraser, and a twelve pencil/crayons package.  All the items were organized and placed in a drawstring cloth bag.

The class watched a video about children in Honduras receiving school kits and students from Kansas making them.   Afterwards, the students and their teacher Lois Gehman, gathered in a circle around the assembled kits and prayed for the children who will receive them.
The School Kits Mission Project is part of Mennonite Central Committee, a world-wide relief and service agency of the Mennonite Church.  The kits will be distributed to families who struggle to afford basic school supplies.  Recently, MCC sent over 28,000 kits to children living in a refugee camp in northeast Kenya.  This camp has a population of 45,000 school-age children.  The kits help students and teachers add some normalcy to disrupted lives.  Other places where school kits are distributed include Honduras, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, and to poorly funded schools in Canada and the United States.  School kits are frequently requested after natural disasters.  Items distributed by MCC mission and service workers throughout the world carry the logo "In the Name of Christ".  The class enjoyed this opportunity to help others.

"Trash Stash" - Community Clean-Up

For the past 24 years, West Fallowfield Christian School students and families work in association with PENNDOT's annual "Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful" roadside trash pick up program.  The "Trash Stash" team at WFCS works in 10 townships in Chester and Lancaster counties.  Held in the Spring, the workday is a major fundraiser project for the school.  The students enjoy cleaning up the community.

Students Make Christmas Cards for Prison Inmates in PA

Students at West Fallowfield Christian School recently made Christmas cards for prison inmates throughout the state.
The distribution of the cards for the inmates is coordinated by an organization called CentrePeace located in Bellefonte, PA.  “They distribute the cards to thousands of inmates as a reminder of the love and hope symbolized by the Christmas season.  Often, the Christmas card, is the only piece of mail an inmate receives during the entire year."

The students were delighted to make and illustrate the cards.  Knowing that the inmates would not get to spend the Christmas holiday with their loved ones, the students included messages of hope in many of the cards with a Bible verse or kind words of encouragement.

Mission Trip to Rose of Sharon Boys' Orphanage in Dominican Republic - 8th Grade

Eighth grade students and adult chaperones have traveled to The Rose of Sharon Orphanage in the Dominican Republic since 2007.  This is an eighth grade opportunity (not mandatory).  Upon their arrival, the team helps with various construction, painting and other miscellaneous but needed projects at the orphanage.  They get to play baseball and bingo with the children.   Above all, they get to share the love of Christ with the children they meet.

Students who are not part of the DR Trip participate in a week of service projects in the local community and the greater Philadelphia area.  The students and parents research area organizations and coordinate serving at these local missions.
